Cook Mode

Cook Mode is the killer feature of Honest Recipes — a distraction-free, step-by-step cooking view designed for when your hands are covered in flour.

What Cook Mode Does

Cook Mode transforms any recipe into a guided cooking experience:

  • Step-by-step view: Shows one instruction at a time, so you can focus on what you're doing right now
  • Screen stays awake: Uses wake lock technology to prevent your phone from going to sleep
  • Large text: Easy to read from across the kitchen
  • Ingredients visible: Always see what you need for the current step

How to Start Cook Mode

  1. 1.Open any saved recipe from your library
  2. 2.Tap the orange Cook button at the top
  3. 3.You're now in Cook Mode — ready to start cooking!

Navigating Steps

Move between steps using:

  • Swipe: Swipe left/right anywhere on the screen to move between steps
  • Tap arrows: Use the left/right arrow buttons if you prefer tapping
  • Step counter: Shows your progress (e.g. “Step 3 of 8”)

Built-in Timers

Cook Mode automatically detects any time mentioned in your recipe instructions and makes them tappable:

  • See “bake for 25 minutes”? Tap the time to start a countdown timer
  • Run multiple timers simultaneously (e.g. one for the oven, one for prep)
  • Get an alert when the timer completes

Pro Tips

  • Prop your phone up: Use a phone stand or lean it against something so you can see it hands-free
  • Landscape mode: Turn your phone sideways for more text on screen at once
  • Works offline: Cook Mode doesn't need internet once the recipe is saved locally
  • Exit anytime: Tap the X or back button to return to the recipe detail view
